Scratchboard Artwork goes Germany!

The three scratchboard drawings below, 'Just Down the Road', 'Winter Moonrise', and 'Hillside Garden', have been purchased by a customer in Germany. I now have art in two countries outside the United States: Germany and Italy. I've been a bit hesitant about selling and shipping my art outside of the USA. Figuring out the best way to ship, calculating the cost, having my artwork go thru customs and waiting for it to arrive safely to its new owner, left me wondering if it was worth it. USPS Priority Mail makes the shipping decision part of it easier now. And though there are some countries I probably wouldn't ship to, and I still have customs to deal with, the excitement of having my art in another country makes it worth a little bit of stress. :o) Click on the images to be taken to their webpage for more information. Though I have created an image similar to this drawing in the past, that drawing was 8 in x 10 in. Winter Sunset Scratchboard

My art for this post is an original miniature scratchboard artwork titled 'Evergreen Sunset'. The scratchboard size is 3 1/4 in x 4 1/4 in. This is another drawing using the snowcovered evergreen theme. I created it to use for my 2004 holiday card. This tiny miniature artwork was done with an exacto blade on black scratchboard. Broad strokes of the blade removed the black ink to create the snow and to allow large areas of color. For the color, I used a small brush to apply opaque watercolor, allowing the brush strokes to remain visible to create drama in the sky against the black. Watercolor was also used to create some of the lighter shadowing. As always, you can contact me with any comments or questions you might have.

Well, I'm finally back and appreciate your patience. I was very busy through the month of October with family matters. But things have settled down now, so I should be able to post more often again. My art for this post is an original ACEO miniature scratchboard artwork titled 'Crow and Sunflower'. The scratchboard size is 2 1/2 in x 3 1/2 in. I created this drawing for an ebay ACEO challenge that required a crow as part of the image. My art for this post is an original scratchboard artwork titled 'Pheasant Feathers'. The scratchboard size is 6 in x 18 in. The pheasant is a beautiful and colorful bird, and originally, I created a similar drawing as a commission using color. But then, I wanted to create an image just as striking using just black and white. Without the bright colors, the patterns, shapes and variety of the feathers are easier to see. Landscape Scratchboard Drawing

My art for this post is an original miniature scratchboard artwork titled 'After the Storm'. The scratchboard size is 4 in x 6 in. I like to challenge myself, and I find each new drawing that I start to be a whole new challenge. In this case, the challenge was to create the illusion of a cloudy sky, breaking up after a storm. And the sun is just starting to show from behind the clouds. AND to do this with just 'dots' created with my exacto blade, also called 'stippling'. I love working with all the dots, but it can be a long drawn out process if the drawing is very large. You can contact me with any comments or questions you might have.

Swan Moon Scratchboard Drawing

My art for this post is an original scratchboard artwork titled 'Swan Moon'. The scratchboard size is 19 in x 12 in. A beautiful swan lifts its graceful wings to test the night air. This is one of a series of drawings I do that uses the moon to back-light the image. The black of the scratchboard lends itself well to night drawings, using the moon as the source of illumination. Because I worked as an advertising and staff artist in the past, I am used to having my images adapted for commercial uses. I was contacted by the singer, Lynn Maudlin, to use my drawing, 'Swan Moon' as the basis of her company, 'Moonbird Music', logo. I allowed her to modify my image and am pleased with the results (that you can see below). I hope you will take time to visit her website and listen to her music. Lynn has a lovely voice.

Irish Setter Scratchboard Drawing

Tiger Scratchboard Drawing

Sorry for my absence! This is the time of year for family visits, and with my Mother living with me, we are very busy with company. I have also been fighting a cold/flu, and it has really sapped my energy. Hopefully, I am on the mend! :o)

My art for this post is a miniature scratchboard artwork titled 'Tiger Siesta', Collection of M. Taylor. The scratchboard size is 6" x 4". It seems all cats whether large or small like to laze in the sun. This one is sleepy and sated after a large meal. I enjoyed creating the pattern of stripes that meet along the ridge of its back. A New Look for DMD Scratchboard Gallery Blog!

Yes, this is definitely a new look! This change is partly because Blogger is encouraging this update. But I am also in the process of changing the look of my website, and I want the two to work well with each other. This page as with my website is a work in progress.

My art for this post is a miniature scratchboard art titled 'Cat Eyes - Alley Cat'. The scratchboard size is 6" x 4". I really enjoy experimenting with different 'faces and eyes'. This cat definitely means business. I would suggest approaching with caution. This scratchboard drawing is now in the Collection of K. Sosin.
